Pouch filling machinery used with flexible laminate packaging
Packaging evidence

Pouch material and laminate specification guide.

Collect the material and format information needed to feed, open, form and seal the intended pouch without guessing from appearance alone.

Start with the finished pack and work back to the machine.

A pouch specification should identify both the physical format and the material construction. Two pouches with the same nominal dimensions may separate, open, grip and seal differently because stiffness, surface friction, zipper bulk, spout position, sealant and supplier tolerances are different.

Premade pouch evidence

Provide the supplier reference, flat width and height, gusset dimensions, usable mouth below any zipper, top trim, seal band, tear notch, spout or cap position and filled reference shape. Measure more than one production pouch and retain the supplier tolerance.

VFFS reel evidence

Provide construction, thickness, web width, print repeat, registration mark, print and unwind direction, core dimensions, reel diameter and winding quality. State the intended longitudinal and cross-seal style and finished bag dimensions.

Material evidence

Ask the packaging supplier for the laminate construction, sealant layer, intended sealing guidance, food-contact declaration where applicable, barrier or product-compatibility information and any restrictions associated with printing, coatings, mono-material design or recycling claims.

Format and material fields to put into the project brief.

The machine supplier needs enough information to identify handling and sealing risk before trial materials are ordered.

Understand the role of the sealant layer.

The layer presented to the jaw and opposing seal surface determines how the package seals under the selected temperature, pressure and dwell conditions. Overall laminate thickness or the outer printed layer does not identify the correct process window by itself.

Request the pouch or film supplier’s sealing guidance and confirm it using the real machine, product and pack. Product contamination, folds, zipper ends, spout fitments, jaw condition, line speed and cooling can all affect the finished result. Do not assume that a nominal material description from another supplier will behave identically.

For seal acceptance, continue to the pouch seal-integrity and leak-testing guide.

Packaging sample pack

  • Supplier specification and batch reference
  • Twenty or more representative pouches where practical
  • At least one filled reference pack
  • Dimension and feature drawing
  • Laminate and sealant identification
  • Print/code drawing and registration details
  • Known sealing guidance and current quality method
  • Food-contact or compatibility evidence where applicable

Zippers, spouts and shaped pouches need feature-specific evidence.

Zipper pouch

Record zipper position, top trim, usable opening and whether production pouches arrive fully closed. The machine must open the pouch without damaging the zipper and place product below the final top-seal band.

Spouted pouch

Record spout location, angle, neck and cap geometry, pouch support point and whether filling occurs through the spout or an open top. The feature changes presentation, gripping and nozzle access.

Shaped or gusseted pouch

Identify the datum used by the magazine and grippers. Confirm the outline and folds remain within tolerance when flat and filled so the pack clears every station and downstream guide.

Handling evidence is developed further in the premade pouch opening and gripper guide.

Pouch material specification questions.

Can the machine be selected from pouch dimensions alone?

No. Dimensions are essential, but opening, stiffness, friction, laminate, sealant, zipper or spout features, supplier tolerance and product behaviour also affect the configuration and trial.

Who confirms food-contact suitability?

The packaging supplier and food business should confirm that the material is suitable for the intended product and conditions of use. UK guidance on food-contact materials is available from the Food Standards Agency.

Why are production samples better than hand-made mock-ups?

Production samples include the real seals, zipper or spout application, surface finish and manufacturing variation that the machine must handle. Mock-ups can help with early layout work but should not replace the final trial material.

Should a recyclable or mono-material claim change the trial?

Any material change should be treated as a new packaging condition until forming, handling, sealing, code adhesion and finished-pack performance have been confirmed. Claims should be supported by the packaging supplier and the applicable assessment route.

What should happen when the supplier changes a laminate?

Use change control. Record the new construction and batch, compare it with the approved material and repeat the checks affected by friction, stiffness, forming, sealing, coding or integrity.

Send the packaging evidence with the machine enquiry.

Include drawings, samples, supplier information and the intended quality method so Lancing can identify handling and sealing questions before the trial.
