Premade pouch handling

Premade pouch opening, gripper and format guide.

Build a handling window that covers normal pouch variation from magazine pickup through opening, filling, sealing and discharge.

A premade pouch must be separated, presented, opened and held before it can be filled.

The handling sequence should be tested with production pouches across the supplier tolerance. A pouch that works when manually opened may still double-pick, curl, slip or fail to present consistently in an automatic magazine.

Magazine separation

Observe stack pressure, surface friction, static, curl, zipper or spout bulk and the datum used to locate the pouch. Record double picks, missed picks and skew rather than correcting them without evidence.

Opening proof

Define how the machine confirms that the mouth is open enough for the chute or nozzle. Vacuum response alone may not prove the complete usable opening where a zipper, gusset or stiff laminate resists movement.

Gripper control

Choose a repeatable grip area clear of features and the final seal. The gripper must hold the pouch during filling and transfer without marking, puncturing, stretching or pulling the top edge out of square.

Build a format matrix around machine datums.

List each pouch and identify where the magazine, pickup, opening device, grippers, fill outlet and seal jaws locate it.

Challenge the opening system with realistic conditions.

Run from a normally loaded magazine, not a small hand-fanned stack. Include pouches from different positions in the box or batch, and observe the effect of static, temperature, storage, surface finish and zipper/spout application.

Record the first failure point. A miss at pickup needs a different corrective path from a pouch that is picked correctly but only partly opened, loses grip during fill or arrives skewed at the seal jaws.

Use the pouch material and laminate guide to control sample identity and the troubleshooting guide to structure failures.

Opening trial observations

  • Magazine load and replenishment method
  • Single-pouch separation rate and double picks
  • Pickup and transfer datum
  • Opening confirmation and usable mouth
  • Gripper position and marks
  • Chute/nozzle clearance
  • Pouch support during fill
  • Top-edge alignment at seal
  • Recovery after a missed or unopened pouch

Zipper and spout formats change the handling sequence.

Zipper

The machine may need to open a supplier-closed zipper or open the pouch above it while preserving a usable mouth below. The final seal must be placed in the intended top band without trapping the zipper ends.

Spout

The spout can become the primary datum or create an uneven stack. Confirm whether the pouch is filled through the spout or open top, how the pack is supported and whether caps arrive fitted.

Gusset

Bottom and side folds must open without twisting. Product drop and pouch support should produce the approved filled profile without pulling the seal band out of alignment.

Pouch opening and gripper questions.

How many pouches are needed for a meaningful handling trial?

The quantity depends on the sequence and planned run, but it should be enough to load and replenish the magazine, observe normal supplier variation, run measured production and retain both accepted and failed examples. Lancing can confirm the required quantity from the trial plan.

Can grippers be set from nominal pouch width?

Nominal width is only one input. The grip datum, feature positions, tolerance, laminate stiffness and filled weight determine the practical setting and whether change parts are required.

Why does an unopened pouch matter if the filler has no-product-no-pouch control?

No-product-no-pouch prevents a dose into a missing pouch, but a partly opened pouch can still cause product loss, seal contamination or mechanical contact. Opening must be confirmed at the level required by the application.

What should happen after a pouch opening fault?

The control sequence should prevent filling, identify or remove the affected pouch, preserve tracking of other pouches and define the conditions for a safe restart.

Should a new pouch supplier trigger another test?

Yes where construction, tolerance, zipper/spout application, stiffness, friction or sealing behaviour changes. Use change control and repeat the affected handling and quality checks.

Send production pouches and a format matrix.

Include the real pouch batch, filled reference, feature drawing, product/dose and the formats expected during the machine’s life.
